After deadly Taliban attack, 

Army Public School reopens today.

 

 

PESHAWAR: The terror-hit Army Public School (APS), along with several other government and private educational institutions resumed their activities on Monday (today) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after obtaining no-objection certificates (NOC) from the provincial government.

A ceremony was held to remember the victims of the Taliban attack on 16 December.
Schools across Pakistan are re-opening after an extended break prompted by the massacre.

Earlier, the provincial government had to face criticism by educationists over its failure to announce a final date for the reopening of local schools, saying the extension in winter vacation had been adversely affecting the studies of school children.
Moreover, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif also attended a commemorative service held at Peshawar's Army Public School in honour of those who had lost their lives during the Dec 16 Taliban attack on the school

                      

Strict security arrangements were seen in place for the re-opening of APS in Peshawar. The Army Public School management told Dawn that psychological counselling sessions would be given to staff and students till Jan 17, whereas regular academic session would begin from Jan 19.

 The Taliban said the attack - the group's deadliest in Pakistan - was in response to a government offensive in North Waziristan and the nearby Khyber area that began in June 2014.

Furthermore, a meeting of officials from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas decided to resume school activities in the region from tomorrow (Tuesday).

 The school killings were condemned across the world, with US President Barack Obama saying terrorists had "once again shown their depravity". The Afghan Taliban also criticised the attack.


The government has ordered institutions to do more to protect schoolchildren and audits have been carried out on hundreds of schools since 16 December, according to Pakistani media.
The school is near a military complex in Peshawar and many of the pupils that attend are the children of military personnel.

An 18-year-old Indian girl has married a stray dog

An 18-year-old Indian girl has married a stray dog as part of a tribal ritual designed to ward off an evil spell.

 

The wedding was hastily organised by village elders after a local guru led Mangli's parents to believe that the teenager possessed ill-luck and that marrying a man would bring destruction to the family and her community.
 
The baffled dog, Sheru, a stray found by the girl's father, was brought to the wedding in a chauffeur driven car and welcomed by revelers.
Mangli, who has not been to school, said she was not happy to wed a dog, but insisted that it will help change her fortunes.
 
The hesitant bride said: 'I am marrying a dog because the village elders believe that my evil spell will be passed on to the dog.
'After that is done, the man I will marry will have a long life.'
Mangli's father Sri Amnmunda agreed.

He said: 'The village elders told us that we should organise the wedding as soon as we can. We had to make sure that the evil spell is destroyed.
'And marrying a dog is the only way to get rid of the bad luck.'
And amazingly, this is not the first time that a local girl has wed a dog in the village.
Sri added: 'Many weddings like this have taken place in our village and also the other neighbouring villages. This is a custom that we thoroughly believe in.'
 
According to the village's customs, the marriage will not affect Mangli's life, and she will be free to marry again later without divorcing the dog.
'My villagers say that many girls like me have followed this ritual and they have gotten rid of their evil spells and are living happy lives now,' said Mangli.
'I will also be free to marry a man of my dreams after the evil spell is over.'

'We had to spend money on this wedding in the same way as we would in a normal wedding. But that is the only way we can get rid of her bad luck and ensure the benevolence of the village.'
Now with the marriage ceremony over, Mangli has to take care of the dog and raise him as a pet for the next few months.

Amazon tribe makes 'first contact' with outside world

Brazil's National Indian Foundation shows isolated indigenous people coming forward for outside assistance after fleeing attacks in Peru. The people, whose language is recognised as part of the Pano linguistic group, reportedly crossed the border after coming under pressure from illegal logging and drug trafficking at home.

An Amazon tribe, uncontacted by the outside world until now, has traveled away from their isolated home to make contact with modern civilization.  

Native people of the Amazon have lived in the area for hundreds or thousands of years without making contact with the modern world. This group lived in Peru, and they traveled over the border into Brazil during their journey to meet the outside world.

World-Record Operation:

Removed 232 Teeth From an Indian Teenager

 

MUMBAI: Surgeons have removed 232 teeth from the mouth of an Indian teenager in what they believe may be a world-record operation.

 Ashik Gavai, 17, sought medical help for a swelling on the right side of his lower jaw and the case was referred to the city´s JJ Hospital, where they found he was suffering from a condition known as complex odontoma, head of dentistry Sunanda Dhivare-Palwankar told.

 

"We operated on Monday and it took us almost seven hours. We thought it may be a simple surgery but once we opened it there were multiple pearl-like teeth inside the jaw bone," she said.

 

After removing those they also found a larger "marble-like" structure which they struggled to shift and eventually had to "chisel out" and remove in fragments, she added.


The youngster´s father, Suresh Gavai, said that "I was worried that it may turn out to be cancer so I brought him to Mumbai,"

Dhivare-Palwankar said the literature they had come across on the condition showed a maximum of 37 teeth being removed in such a procedure, whereas she and her team had counted more than 232 taken from Gavai´s mouth.

"I think it could be a world record" she said.

Pakistan assures US Zarb-e-Azb is against all Terrorists

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan assured the United States that Islamabad was addressing the threat of terrorism through Operation Zarb-e-Azb which will ensure that there is no distinction between the several terrorist groups in North Waziristan.

 

Voices have been raised in Washington that the army here is giving a safe passage to the Haqqani Network.The assurance was given to Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Ambassador James Dobbins by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar, Adviser to the Prime Minister Sartaj Aziz, as well as Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif during wide-ranging talks on domestic and international issues.

 

Dobbins told the Pakistani leaders that the US supported its relationship with Pakistan for regional stability and agreed to continue working together in order to build a stronger partnership to advance the common objectives.

Delhi is the most unsafe for children

 

Delhi has earned the shameful distinction of being the most unsafe city in India for women.

 Now comes another shocker. Among India’s 53 mega-cities, the national capital is the most unsafe for children as crimes against children have reportedly gone up exponentially all over the country. 
On an average, crimes against 16 children are reported in Delhi everyday, official data has revealed. The capital is followed by Mumbai, where crimes are committed against three children daily.

  

All across the country, crimes against children went up by 52.5 per cent in a year. Of the total crimes, 54.2 per cent of cases were related to kidnapping and abduction of children, 51.3 per cent to trafficking of girls, 49.3 per cent to abutment to suicide while 44.7 per cent of cases were related to rapes.

 Sanjay Gupta, director of Chetna, an NGO that works for the rights of children, feels the rapid increase in the capital’s migrant population has led to the increase in crimes against children.

Delhi Police officers said these issues can be reported at the Delhi Police Juvenile Justice Unit.

“We have taken this initiative to create awareness in society about issues of children protection. The objective is to create an aware society that responds to the needs of children in various situations,” an officer said.
